Abstract
Black Americans hold Christianity in high regard within their communities. You may never hear them speak the word of the Lord but it would not be far off to suspect they either grew up Christian or currently attend church. Black Christianity is influenced by many other religions from around the world but you would never hear them admit it. Spiritualism in the United States often needs a name or needs to fit into a box. White Xhristian nationalism refers to the belief that the United States was founded as a Christian Nation, even though the constitution never mentions God. Black spirituality was born during slavery and overall has evolved to being a tool of the oppressed. Why would Black Americans want to be worshiping a God who for hundreds of years sought to oppress them and allow for them to be enslaved? This research aims to dissect the fundamentals of White Christian nationalism and how it has poisoned the Black Church. We begin at slavery and see how Black spiritualism evolved over time and was a big cornerstone in the Civil Rights Movement. We dissect spiritual practices like hoodoo, voodoo, and christianity. These show how Black spiritualism is ever evolving and has always had different motives than White Christian Nationalism. God was used as a tool to oppress but somehow people found a way to be able to use them to free themselves from their oppressor.
