The Significance of Black Madonna in Poland: Pilgrimages and LGBT Controversy

Abstract

This study examines the historical background of the recent controversy between the Roman Catholic Church and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) groups in Poland, comparing the views of both sides. The current controversy is based on the dichotomy of ‘old’ and ‘new’ in the context of the history of the Roman Catholic religion, religious pilgrimages to the venerated Black Madonna in Częstochowa and LGBT groups’ rights and freedoms. The concept of identity of the Polish people in the context of Polish history are introduced.
