AI Mediations in the Virtual Writing Classroom: Examining the Rhetorical Stance of AI and Its Consequences

Abstract

Participants in this workshop will share experiences, witnesses, and observations of student encounters with AI in the virtual classroom. We will work through the differing rhetorical stances AIs take in order to develop mediation strategies for students encountering AI in the classroom. The focus will be on understanding the conditions and limits of current AI features with an eye toward understanding how the rhetorical positioning of AI is converging with–and diverging from– human collaboration.
