Empowering Trainers towards Digital Literacy: the AVTIA (Audiovisual Translation for Inclusion and Accessibility) Project

Abstract

In recent years, accessibility and inclusivity have become crucial priorities in higher education. But despite increasing awareness, there remains a significant gap in accessible digital training resources, particularly for lecturers in higher education who aim to educate themselves and others on accessibility and inclusion. Similarly, not many online resources have been made available to train translation students towards accessible and inclusive audiovisual translation. In other words, there is a lack of tools that equip trainers with digital pedagogical expertise and practical knowledge to teach accessibility effectively. AVTIA is an ongoing Erasmus+ project that addresses this need by promoting the training of digital literacy, raising awareness on inclusion and making audiovisual and inclusive content universally accessible. This project aims to create, implement, and disseminate new and innovative training content for empowering trainers to teach and assess inclusion in audiovisual translation. In this regard, AVTIA provides specific solutions addressing the need for coherent and cohesive audiovisual translation for inclusion and accessibility. Moreover, it raises awareness on audiovisual legislation for inclusion and guidelines. It also helps build and consolidate required knowledge, competences and skills so that trainers may guide students or novice translators to offer audiovisual translation for inclusion services. In this conference, we aim to present samples of the piloted training module aimed for lecturers (Subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing: The practice) consisting of 3 units: Fostering Digital Literacy in AVT for Subtitling Platforms, Subtitling vs. SDH, an Intralingual Approach, and Subtitling vs. SDH, an Interlingual Approach.
