Human-centered Language Learning: Digital Pedagogies and Community Building in Online Humanities Classrooms

Abstract

This paper examines how digital pedagogies in online language education can center human experience while leveraging AI and multimedia tools to support inclusive, culturally responsive learning. Drawing from almost three decades of experience developing and teaching fully online Spanish and Italian courses at universities in the U.S., I explore how thoughtful course design, multilingual storytelling, and asynchronous community-building strategies can foster deep student engagement, even in geographically and culturally diverse classrooms. Through case studies in course modules—ranging from diaspora studies and digital cultural mapping to discussion boards in multiple languages—I reflect on how technology can mediate not only knowledge transfer but also emotional and social presence. I discuss the use of learning platforms, AI-enhanced feedback tools, and digital storytelling as means to personalize learning and increase student agency. Ultimately, this paper proposes a model for using e-learning not just to deliver content, but to build transformative, human-centered communities in virtual space.
