Abstract
New educational artificial intelligence tools (EAIT) are emerging, some focusing on intelligent tutoring and automated grading. The full potential of AI in education is yet to be realized (Çelik, 2023). Teachers must have the knowledge and confidence to incorporate AI into their teaching (Çelik, 2023), and pre-service teachers (PTs) need opportunities to evaluate how AI aligns with their curriculum and teaching philosophies (Guilherme, 2019). This study explored how 21 PTs in a Canadian Education program experienced using generative AI in lesson planning. Participants completed a pre-survey and created lesson plans utilizing AI tools, such as ChatGPT. Using an i-TPACK framework (Çelik, 2023), they critically analyzed AI-generated content. Findings suggested that PTs viewed AI as a lesson planning tool, engaging critically with AI deepened their understanding of its pedagogical implications. Although there were significant increases in TCK and TPACK scores, participants showed no notable change in their understanding of AI ethics.
