Only Human: Facilitation in the Age of AI

Abstract

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshapes education with automation, personalisation, and predictive insights, the need for human facilitation has never been greater. While AI tools can support content delivery and streamline processes, they cannot replicate the empathy, presence, and adaptive responsiveness that make learning meaningful. Only Human: Facilitation in the Age of AI is an interactive, game-based workshop that re-centres the uniquely human dimensions of teaching and learning. Participants will engage in practice-oriented activities that mirror the unpredictability and diversity of real classroom interactions. Through collaborative challenges and guided reflection, the session creates space for educators to surface the values and instincts that distinguish effective facilitation, while also experimenting with strategies to complement AI-enabled tools. The workshop draws on principles of experiential pedagogy, emphasising hands-on practice over abstract discussion. Participants will not only exchange insights with peers but also experience the challenges and rewards of facilitation in action. This approach ensures that the learning is lived, not just conceptualised. By the end of the session, participants will leave with a deeper awareness of their facilitation strengths, practical strategies to sustain engagement and adaptability, and renewed confidence in their irreplaceable role as educators. More than a skills session, this workshop offers a timely reminder: in the age of AI, it is the human touch—the ability to connect, empathise, and make meaning—that remains essential to effective facilitation.
