Abstract
In a world where a single ChatGPT prompt can generate a polished essay in any language, teachers and researchers must reimagine practices to preserve the value of language learning. Rather than resisting generative AI, the challenge is to design meaningful, ethical strategies that serve applied linguistics. While studies highlight AI’s potential in language education (Pituxcoosuvarn et al., 2025; Regala & Caballes, 2025; Salmanova, 2025), few have examined its role in developing oral proficiency, particularly pronunciation and intelligibility. This workshop will explore how to implement generative AI tools in an ethical and entertaining way to enhance students’ oral skills. Participants will learn to design pedagogical AI-based tools that support listening and speaking development. This interactive session includes a hands-on activity to create customizable resources such as roleplay scenarios and personalized exercises. No coding experience is required. The aim is to explore pedagogical approaches to integrating these technologies in ways that foster ethical use, critical thinking, and creativity. Strategies include transforming platforms such as ChatGPT or Copilot, into interactive spaces where learners engage in spoken dialogue through personalized roleplay. Learners can receive instant feedback as well as real-time scaffolding features such as definitions, translations, pronunciation tips, and follow-up activities tailored to their output. This workshop will also present preliminary findings from the speaker’s research project: the development of an AI-based roleplay adventure app integrated into a French as a Foreign Language course. The presentation will analyze how such roleplay environments influence constructs related to oral proficiency.
