Human-Centered AI for Community-Engaged Pedagogy: Designing Legacy Systems for Learning and Transformation

Abstract

This interactive workshop explores how human-centered AI can be integrated into community-engaged pedagogy to create more inclusive, responsive, and transformative learning experiences. Drawing on principles of Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) and leadership frameworks such as LegacyOS and Block to Boardroom, participants will examine how AI can amplify community knowledge, support digital equity, and strengthen pathways from the classroom to broader social impact. The session will begin with a brief overview of human-centered AI and its relevance to higher education and community partnerships. Participants will then engage in hands-on activities, including small group discussions and design exercises, to map the assets and opportunities AI brings to their own teaching and learning contexts. The workshop concludes with a collaborative reflection on how AI-enabled pedagogies can serve as “legacy systems” that equip learners to lead, innovate, and contribute to social transformation. By the end of the session, participants will leave with practical strategies for integrating AI into their teaching and partnership work, grounded in equity, creativity, and community-building.
