Implementation of K to 12 Program in the Philippines
In 2013, in the Philippines introduce the K to 12 program, extending basic education from 10 to 12 years. This structure encompasses Kindergarteen, six years in primary education, 4 years in junior high school and two years of senior high school. The initiative aims to enhance educational quality by providing students with a more comprehensive and skills-focused curriculum, better preparing them for higher education or employment. Students can choose specialization based on their interests and career goals. It also allows Filipino students to be eligible for employment and higher education abroad without needing additional schooling. In addition, it provide more time to master concepts and skills. But on the contrary, longer schooling meant increased expenses for tuition, transportation allowance, school supplies and other school expenses, on the first years of its implementation there was a lack of facilities, classrooms, learning materials and qualified teachers for senior high schools. Both students an teachers struggled to adjust to the new curriculum. Despite the promise of employability after senior high school, many employers still prefered college graduates, which resulted in limited job opportunities for them. The program is a massive structural reform aimed at raising the quality and competitiveness of Filipino Education. While it has brought long term benfits in terms of curriculum enrichment and global alignment, it has also presented financial, logistic and psychological challenges and issues for many Filipino.
