Phonology and Accents on Cinema
Hey guys ! Came here after watching a video of an language expert analyzing accent interpretations on cinema ( random, I know ) but it was very interesting to watch it and analyze from the point of view of a language student. He really emphasizes the way our mouth, throat and nose structures can make people sound completely different from the role they are playing. He explains various terms used on phonology analysis and it’s so interesting to learn how pronunciation can vary so much, even with people from similar backgrounds. Each actor and actress shown is performing, but it stills brings their personal voice characteristics. Hope you like it and tell me what you thought about the video !

The real reason ' To Kill a Mockinbird' became so famous
Hey guys, came here to talk again about another Vox video, I just love their content hahaha. So, this video specifically remembered me about when we talked about American and English culture influencing the learning of the English language even in others countries, especially Chimamanda Adichies lecture that I enjoyed very much. It exemplifies how a book or movie can become extremely famous and deemed important because of timing and circumstance. Hope you like it and tell me your opinions about the same brazillian and international books being read by students for such a long time !

Emily in Paris : Romanticizing ignorance
Emily in Paris is an american show streamed by Netflix, that have as the main character an american marketing executive named Emily Cooper, who is sent by her boss to Paris, with the goal of helping another marketing firm on their 'american point of view'. The whole plot of the show is Emily showing her perspective on the french culture and habits, so one can imagine some problems that may have with this conflict of perspectives. But the problem is not the conflict but the fact that the show producers are mainly american and this contributes and affects the way french people are portrayed. When she arrives in Paris, most people seem to be rude and snob; the only people that seem to be gentle with her are the guys interested in her ( it’s a reccurent thing on the show, every way she goes there’s a white, attractive, perfect English speaker falling in love with her instantly ). There’s so many issues with this show, I could speak all day : it’s a comedy show, but the narrative is so shallow that does not interest the viewer; the fact that even though Paris is one of the most culturally diverse capitals in the world, there’s only two non-white significant characters ( that do not try to represent French culture and are either extremely disrespectful to Emily or do not have any enough lines to make an impact ); and it even has a scene where Emily have a relationship with a minor that becomes a really weird atmosphere, that is soon forgotten of course. One does not need to be French to understand how ignorant the narrative is and it’s shameful to think that this show, known for being superficial and disrespectful, was indicated to 2 categories on the Golden Globe Awards. At the end, Emily in Paris is really an illusion created by American people, that cannot be continued. I will leave a link that really exemplifies and summarizes all of what I talk about and I based my research on it. Hope you guys like it and tell me more about what you thought !

About 'Decolonizing the mind' and the necessity of cultural education at childhood
Really enjoyed reading and learning more about Ms. Thiongo story and perspective as a kenian citizen. It's insane to realize how much of our life is defined by our childhood and school years. Even though she was living on a country defined by constant political and social chaos, she was fortunate enough to live in an area that could provide her a decent education, not at all fair or understanding of hers country historical knowledge and culture, but still education. How many children, in the same situation as her, were able to get that ? And it's even crazier to think that the same language that she felt represented by and was used to soon turned to be forbidden just as foreigners decided so, such as English was the discipline she majored at, but maybe she wouldn't if her country turned out more stable and outside people considered that her culture was as important and worthy of respect as theirs. It really shows how the way we are thought to perceive the world as children have major effects on our adult life and our choices from that moment on. I remember as a kid, my parents were able to buy me books and therefore I grew up passionate about language and words, leading me to understand more about myself and continue studying a matter that I really loved. Through books and tales that I learned about my countries history, folklore and art, and it’s sad to see so many culture erased in spite of small minded people in power. In the credits, I applied a short video talking a bit about the importance of cultural understanding at the learning environment, hope you guys like it !
