Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Despite the growing integration of Generative AI (GAI) tools in higher education, disparities in adoption, engagement, and skill development persist among students. These disparities may be influenced (and potentially further exacerbated) by factors such as socioeconomic status (SES), varying levels of institutional support, and differences in faculty practices (Abbasi et al., 2024; Almassaad et al., 2024; Chung, 2015). This study illustrates the roles of perceived usefulness, socioeconomic status, institutional support, and faculty affiliation in shaping students' interactions with GAI tools. Data was collected through an anonymised survey completed by 581 consenting students from five faculties at a research-intensive South African university. Through an explanatory quantitative research strategy, statistical tests (including Spearman Rank Correlation, Mann-Whitney U Test, Kruskal-Wallis H Test, and Chi-Square Test), reveal that perceived usefulness significantly drives engagement (|p| = 0.531, p < 0.001), while socioeconomic disparities impact engagement frequency (p = 0.0449). Institutional support enhances self-efficacy in reading and writing (p = 0.0303), and engagement positively correlates with skill development outcomes such as writing (|p| = 0.2524, p < 0.001). The study was framed by the Adoption, Inclusion and Engagement (AIE) framework developed specifically for this study. Informed by the Technology Acceptance Model, Digital Divide Theory, Self-Efficacy Theory, and underpinned by Socio-Constructivist Learning Theory, the AIE framework highlights the intersection of technology adoption, inclusive practices, and active engagement. Future research should focus on integrating GAI tools into curricula across disciplines, providing guidelines for use, and addressing socioeconomic barriers to access of the tools.

Advancing STEM in Early Education.
Haley Neuhausen
Poster Session
STEM topics and careers have become pivotal as we have moved into the 21st century. As we work to innovate and change our technologies, it is important that we have the knowledge and technology to keep up with those needs. Right now, there is a projected 2.5 million jobs that are expected to be vacant in STEM by 2038. In order to fill that gap, we need to look at the education element of this. It is important that this be filled in, not only, higher education, but also in secondary and early education. When looking at specifically early education, we can work to develop interests in careers early. A lot of the fundamental memories and interest are formed at this age, and can ultimately project where a student will go from there. With the assistance of AI and human technologies, we will be able to see movements towards a more well-rounded education, including STEM, if our educators were to take that step.

The Occupational Profile
Daniela Colorado Orozco
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The main objective of this research, which stems from the macro-project Evaluation of the Social Impact from a Critical Perspective of the Training Program for Early Childhood Educators in the City of Medellin, is to establish the understanding that early childhood educators in the city of Medellin have of their occupational profile. The text presents the findings that took place in the development of the Diploma Course on the Training of Early Childhood Educational Agent in the City of Medellin, where Research-Action-Participation was used as a methodological guide in its development in the consolidation of a scenario of dialogue and reflection based on the pedagogical experiences and formative trajectories of early childhood teachers. From the results, it is possible to identify the different understandings of an occupational profile according to the teachers' discourses, which reflect the consolidation of the personal perception of the profession, as well as the daily practice of the same, highlighting the incidence of these understandings in pedagogical practice. Aspects such as the qualities and characteristics of early childhood teachers, the reflection and transformation of pedagogical practice, the qualification of knowledge and continuous training, and the design of pedagogical strategies and interventions are highlighted.

Interpersonal Education in Undergraduate Health Students
Tracy Bonoffski
Workshop Presentation
Interprofessional education (IPE) is an essential approach for preparing students to enter the healthcare workforce, where teamwork and collaboration are important competencies. IPE has been promoted by numerous health organizations, to promote teamwork, enhance the quality of patient care, and improve health outcomes. In response, universities are beginning to create and sustain authentic and inclusive IPE activities, with which students can engage. Additionally, the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and IPE in healthcare is increasingly important as AI technologies become more integrated into medical practice and education. This project is intended to enhance IPE activities being implemented, improve student outcomes, streamline learning activities for faculty, and address the intersection of AI and IPE in this process.

Exploring Virtual Reality Inside Healthcare Curricula
Laura Sheerman
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Virtual reality (VR) presents opportunities for new pedagogical approaches in the classroom that can enhance student learning in healthcare qualifications. UK Further Education (FE) colleges aim to equip 16-18+ year-old students with the skills and knowledge required to enter the workplace. Exposing young students to a range of different experiences is a challenge in healthcare because of industry placement restrictions. VR has the potential to enrich health curricula through the provision of on-demand, safe, and close to life healthcare scenarios for use in the classroom. Reports of VR explorations in real-world classroom settings are scarce, but crucial to understanding practical and pedagogical implications. This mixed-methods case study reports the experiences of four educators and eleven students after a weekly exposure to VR over 4 weeks. Semi-structured interviews and in-class surveys were completed. Four themes are discussed: 1. Engagement; 2. Barriers to Learning; 3. Knowledge Consolidation and 4. Practical Preparation. Implications for the integration of VR in the classroom are highlighted from both perspectives. Compared with non-VR learning, students felt VR was engaging and authentic and helped create unique, effective learning experiences by connecting current and previous learning. Students also experienced adverse effects, challenges with orientation to hardware, and psychological discomfort.

Integrating AI in English Language Assessment in the Philippines - a Critical Realism Approach
Dan Henry Gonzales
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be effectively integrated into English language assessment practices in the Philippines to enhance teaching and learning outcomes. It employs a critical realism approach, balancing the objective dimensions of AI-driven data with the subjective experiences of educators, students, and policymakers. The research is guided by three core questions: first, identifying current assessment practices to pinpoint areas where AI tools can offer greater efficiency and deeper learning insights; second, determining key ethical considerations such as fairness, data privacy, and responsible technology use; and third, examining stakeholder perceptions, with an emphasis on acceptance, adoption, and policy implications. A mixed-methods design, incorporating both qualitative and quantitative analyses, provides a comprehensive understanding of the practical challenges and opportunities involved. Collaborations with academic and research institutions further inform policy recommendations, ensuring alignment with local contexts and global best practices. By integrating AI responsibly, this study proposes clear guidelines for improving assessment techniques, promoting equitable student outcomes, and advancing the quality of English language education in the Philippines.
Gradual Implementation of Active Learning Impacts Students’ Motivation and Critical Thinking in an Undergraduate Genetics Course
Marcos Nahmad
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
A major challenge for undergraduate science instructors is to maintain students motivated while, at the same time, deliver critical thinking skills. We conducted a prospective study to measure the impact of gradually implementing active learning on motivation and critical thinking in students enrolled in several sections of a genetics course, which has high drop out and failure rates in the undergraduate biology curriculum of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Instructors received training and guidance on planning and delivering active-learning material in their course, but the implementation has been gradual, and several topics are still taught through traditional lecturing. We hypothesize that topics taught using evidence-based active learning result in higher achievement in test scores, higher levels of critical thinking and student motivation compared to topics delivered traditionally by the same instructors. Preliminary data suggest that active learning enhance student motivation and critical thinking, especially in students with a record of poor or average scores in prior courses. These results suggest that a gradual implementation of student-centered, evidence-based teaching practices could significantly improve learning and motivation of students.

Examining the Efficacy of Intelligent Virtual Tutors in Early Childhood Literacy
Nermin Karademir
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This study investigates the implementation of Intelligent Virtual Tutors (IVTs) in early childhood literacy education through a multimodal social semiotics lens. Whilst IVTs promise personalised learning experiences through artificial intelligence and adaptive algorithms, their effectiveness in supporting diverse literacy development remains understudied. The research employs a qualitative case study approach, examining three children aged 4-6 in South and Mid-East England. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with parents and teachers between October and December 2024, focusing on the children's engagement with IVT platforms and their literacy development across multiple modes of representation. The investigation explores how IVTs address the complex nature of early literacy development, encompassing traditional reading and writing skills alongside the interpretation of various semiotic resources including gestures, images, and sounds. Key areas of analysis include parent’s and teachers’ perspectives of IVTs' capacity to accurately assess learning styles, maintain engagement, and ensure developmental appropriateness. Initial findings suggest varying levels of engagement and effectiveness across different modes of literacy learning, with particular insights into the role of human-computer interaction in fostering intrinsic motivation. Initial findings also highlights the quality of dialogic interactions and the ability of IVTs to support meaning-making across multiple modes of representation. Overall, this study aims to contribute to the discourse on technology integration in early years by providing empirical insights into the potential and limitations of IVTs. With full analysis expected to be finalised in mid-February, the findings aim to inform educators, researchers, and designers about the responsible integration of these emerging technologies.
