Mannequin Makeover: Collaborative Innovation in Sustainable Exhibition Design

Abstract

Mannequins are more than display tools; they support the curatorial narratives and conservation needs for a museum. Three teams from the National Heritage Board: curatorial, conservation, and digital innovation, worked together to address representation, conservation, and sustainability challenges in exhibition development by re-imagining the standard mannequins typically used. Using historical photographs and 3D modelling, the team created renders of mannequins that could represent the Asian diasporas in Singapore, past and present. These were printed to historical dimensions and in a modular fashion, reducing waste and making the exhibition development process more sustainable. This paper tracks the process from concept to audience engagement and test-printing, highlighting the lessons learnt along the way.
