The Para-Pedagogical
Lleah Smith
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Inspired by Helguera’s (2010, 2011) 'Education as Art' and the para-curatorial theories of McDowell (2016) and Hoffmann (2011, 2013), this research introduces the para-pedagogical, my new neologism that reimagines the role of arts-rich pedagogies within cultural institutions. While the 'para' in para-curatorial is often perceived as 'lesser than' (Hoffmann, 2011, 2013; McDowell 2016), the 'para' in the para-pedagogical liberates pedagogy by freeing it from the constraints of exhibitions. This autonomy enables pedagogy to align with institutional missions and move with its own intentionality, positioning the para-pedagogical as a transformative framework for the GLAM sector to act as engines of innovation and social participation. By fostering sustainable, community-centered approaches, it empowers institutions to respond flexibly to evolving societal needs. The para-pedagogical reclaims education as a critical, relational practice driven by it's own intentionality, it emphasises slow, dialogical, and situated formats that nurture shared knowledge and material entanglements both with and beyond the institutional frame. By prioritising storied, embodied learning experiences, the para-pedagogical supports GLAM institutions in creating inclusive spaces for collaboration and dialogue. Aligned with the Reggio Emilia approach, the para-pedagogical prompts reflective questions such as, 'Who am I working for today?' and 'What opportunities are we hoping to afford?' (Alkhudhair, 2014). Through productive agitation (Smith, 2024), it fosters intellectual and ecological resilience, enabling institutions to decentralise knowledge systems and embrace non-Western and more-than-human epistemologies. The para-pedagogical transforms GLAM institutions into vital sites of social participation, advancing sustainability and equitable, innovative futures.

Re-envisioning Oral History Archives as Tools for Self-Actualization and Collective Liberation through Research-Creation and Participatory Performance Art
Gracia Dyer Jalea
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
By responding to the current-day needs and interests of descendants, oral history interviews are resurrected from archives to become useful tools for self-actualization. Moving beyond mere remembrance into spaces for co-created futures, this study explores how oral history interviews can be used to break cycles and heal division so we can learn, grow and discover new pathways forward that don’t replicate harm from the past. Drawing on oral history, research-creation, autoethnography and ethnic studies articulated through the work of Filipinx scholars, this approach asks the reader to consider oral history interviews as more than historical texts. Through this approach they become valuable resources for descendants. As relics, they carry the potential to strengthen, repair and maintain relationships that have been severed due to colonial rule, displacement, separation, and death. Through oral history interviews and participatory performance art the sharing of stories and memories of the past moves beyond mere remembrance into spaces for co-created futures, where the burden of repair is a collective effort to listen, learn, engage with, and make sense of what was, so we can move forward into what could be. Through images, audio, and film, I share examples of oral history interviews recorded with my grandmother in 2008 that were re-visited and re-purposed in 2023 to produce two participatory art pieces that were performed at the Acts of Listening Lab at the Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling in Montreal, engaging my mother, daughter and I in a process of co-creation.
The MOCO Museum Network
Paula Jaulín Lecina
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
The contemporary art collection of Kim and Lionel Logchies, former dutch gallerists, has given rise to a museum network with locations in Amsterdam (2016), Barcelona (2021), and London (2024), all housed in historically significant buildings. This study examines the role of these collectors as patrons of contemporary art and their influence on redefining the museum as a hybrid and inclusive space where artistic exhibition, sensory experience and technological innovation converge. Through a multidisciplinary approach, this research explores the architectural and urban configuration of these museums, their management model and the curatorial strategies implemented to attract a broad and diverse audience. Particular attention is given to the interaction between art and the market, analyzing the impact of the MOCO brand in the cultural economy and its positioning within experiential tourism. Additionally, the study addresses the inclusivity / integration of new technologies and digital interactivity in contemporary museography, considering how these tools enhance accessibility, visitor engagement, and the dissemination of art in the digital environment. In this context, MOCO emerges as a paradigm of the 21st-century museum, characterized by the fusion of art and entertainment, the creation of immersive narratives and adaptation to the dynamics of cultural consumption in the age of social media. This analysis contributes to the reflection of the evolving concept of the museum and its role in the democratization of art.
Grief, Empathy, and Inclusion - How Museums Support Visitors Through Loss
Katya Provornaya
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper, based on my chapter for the Routledge Handbook of Museum and Heritage Education (2025), explores how museums can serve as spaces for healing, helping visitors navigate grief, and fostering empathy and inclusion. The COVID-19 pandemic amplified collective experiences of loss, underscoring the need for inclusive spaces that address and process grief. Loss manifests in various forms – such as the loss of health, meaningful relationships, and forced migration – and often remains socially neglected or overlooked, leaving individuals unsupported in their grieving process. Museums, as public institutions, have begun to embrace their role in supporting emotional well-being by offering programs that help individuals process their grief, adapt to life after loss, and build connections within their communities. This presentation draws on participatory learning theory, object-based learning frameworks, and grief studies to explore the transformative role museums play in nurturing empathy and social connection. Through three case studies—the Anchorage Museum (USA), the Whitworth (UK), and the Museum of Loss (UK)—the paper highlights how museums create inclusive spaces for reflection and healing. These case studies focus on addressing environmental loss, baby loss, and displacement and demonstrate how museums can engage visitors in empathetic, community-oriented experiences that support emotional well-being. By fostering an open, inclusive environment for visitors to process grief, museums can promote healing and resilience. This research emphasises the importance of creating spaces where every visitor feels seen, heard, and supported in their personal and collective journey through loss.
Are Museums Inclusive Places for Generally Excluded Social Groups?
Nancy Rocio Rueda Esteban
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
In the beginning, museums used to be places for elite and academic visitors, nonetheless, these institutions have evolved towards accessibility, inclusivity, and openness, to allow entrance to different groups of the community, and allow different voices in their exhibitions. But, to what point do museums still exclude people, who are at the same time socially excluded groups? What is the role of museums in the inclusion and awareness of these people in society? Homeless, victims, and migrants are generally groups of people excluded from the social life of cities. The objective of this research is to analyze whether museums consider socially excluded groups and how they try to construct the social fabric of cities with inclusive strategies in the capital city of Colombia, Bogotá, a place known as a receiving city for displaced people from the conflict and migrants, with difficult social issues. A qualitative methodology is used, first to identify the museums that apply inclusive strategies to these groups of people. Then in-depth interviews are made to understand activities and their impact on society.
A Care-ful Approach to Participatory Practices in Art Museums
Judith Abellán Reina
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
This paper analyzes citizen participation in art museums as a care tool designed to engage with local communities. Specifically, the research focuses on the case study of the health program ‘Cuid’Art’ at the Garrotxa Museum (Catalonia, Spain). The aim is to examine its impact on all parties involved and to evaluate the role and significance of the museum in its surrounding community. In Catalonia, many museums have embraced citizen participation as a primary strategy to connect with their audiences. However, despite its democratic and pedagogical potential, many of these initiatives lack a coherent framework to standardize criteria, theories and models that could guide museum practitioners. This research seeks to establish indicators for assessing their influence and effectiveness, aiming to serve as a valuable and practical tool to enhance the Catalan museum sector. Using a qualitative approach and an ethnographic fieldwork based on participant observation, interviews, and focus groups, the ‘Cuid’Art’ program is analyzed to comprehend the uses, interpretations, and behaviors that shape participatory processes as ‘care work’ in museums. Thus, the project exemplifies participation from a site-specific standpoint, meaning that it is designed to meet the needs of the people and the organizations in the surrounding areas. Although participants’ sense of agency may be limited, the program highlights the experiences of a vulnerable group using art as a transformative tool. Ultimately, it reflects the museum’s commitment to social care and well-being, connecting participants with the institution, objects and space in an intimate, safe, accessible and inclusive way.
Reframing Success on Social Media
Ellen Charlesworth
Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
There is a prevalent belief in the UK museum sector that posting on social media helps museums reach larger and more diverse audiences. However, recent studies have shown that museums’ online audiences are generally no more diverse than their on-site counterparts. Our research analyses over 3,400 UK museums’ social media accounts over two years to investigate why this is the case. Adopting a multidisciplinary approach, we use statistical analysis alongside supporting interviews with museum professionals to ask which digital strategies work. Moving beyond the strategies of ‘superstar’ museums with large digital teams and significant resources at their disposal, we explore how social media success may look across the entire sector. After outlining general trends in the data, we will spotlight the successes and innovative practices of two groups of museums: those based in rural Scotland and transport museums. These two examples saw – somewhat unexpectedly – large and highly engaged international audiences throughout the pandemic. By looking in-depth at their online offering, we explore how they were able to cultivate an open dialogue with online audiences and converted online engagement into on-site visits. Situating these examples in lessons from the wider sector, we aim to provide clear takeaways for museums and outline a different model of social media success.
