Collaboration between Institutions and Disciplines as a Pathway for the Future: An Example of the Workshop “Intimate Spaces of Everyday Life”

Abstract

The workshop “Intimate Spaces of Everyday Life” is a project of the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb which was held in 2024. The workshop involves students and professors from four faculties of the University of Zagreb: the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology), the Academy of Fine Arts (Animation and New Media Department), the Faculty of Architecture (School of Design and Department of Architectural Design) and the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology (Department of Wood Technology). The workshop is dedicated to reflecting upon and critically analyzing intimate spaces, their creation, characteristics and changes, as well as the positive and negative emotions associated with them, and the roles that intimate spaces play in individuals’ lives and in their relationships with others. Through research, analysis and interpretation of intimate spaces, the aim is to contribute to understanding the interaction between people and space. In addition to lectures delivered by professors that addressed theoretical concepts and methodological approaches to space across various disciplines, the workshop places a strong emphasis on collaborative student teamwork, with professors acting as mentors. The paper reviews the workshop’s content, its planning process, the research component, and the co-creation of a student exhibition “New Intimate Spaces”. The emphasis is on the potential of interdisciplinary collaboration between institutions and between disciplines. This collaboration providing students with insights into museum work and with opportunities to acquire new knowledge and skills.
