Creative Belonging - Inviting Community into the Artistic Process

Abstract

Studio Vizcaya, a participatory arts program at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, reimagines the traditional museum experience by centering visitor agency, co-creation, and meaningful engagement. Rooted in the early 20th-century tradition of commissioning site-specific artworks for the estate, Studio Vizcaya continues this legacy through annual, artist-led initiatives that invite community members into the creative process. Each iteration of the program features a commissioned artist who facilitates a series of onsite workshops where participants collaboratively develop artworks that culminate in a public event. This event highlights the collective efforts of many individuals and positions the museum as a living space shaped by ongoing participation and creativity. This showcase demonstrates how museum programming may transform visitors from observers into makers, offering opportunities for expression, peer learning, and connection across generations and backgrounds. The program intentionally reduces barriers to participation and fosters inclusive, sensory-rich experiences that reflect the local cultural diversity. Artists are selected for their capacity to engage in collaborative dialogue and to guide a creative process that is both artistically rigorous and community-driven. By activating the site through collaborative artmaking, Studio Vizcaya strengthens community connections, expands access to high-quality arts experiences, and reinforces the museum’s role as a vibrant, evolving public space.
