Stealth Assessment in Clinical Education: Fostering Authentic and Deep Learning
Authentic learning in medical education thrives when students engage in real or simulated clinical scenarios that provide continuous feedback, rather than facing the pressure of traditional examinations. One of the most innovative and effective approaches to achieving this is Stealth Assessment.
In this method, students participate in clinical simulations, such as interacting with a virtual patient, diagnosing conditions, making treatment decisions, and communicating professionally. Their choices and behaviors are recorded and analyzed indirectly, without the student being aware that they are being formally assessed. This enables students to focus on authentic learning and skill development, rather than merely earning a grade.
A key advantage of this approach is its ability to evaluate complex non-cognitive skills, such as ethical decision-making, empathy, critical thinking, and communication. Furthermore, the feedback provided emphasizes growth and improvement rather than numeric scores, which promotes self-directed and continuous learning.
In my experience, Stealth Assessment enables deep, competency-based learning, providing students with a safe and supportive environment where they can make mistakes, learn from them, and develop professional expertise. This approach demonstrates that assessment can go beyond measurement—it can itself become a powerful tool for authentic learning.
