Integrating Coding and Computational Thinking through DepEd’s ICT Curriculum
One effective program for increasing understanding of how computing works in the Philippines is the Department of Education’s integration of coding and computational thinking in the K–12 ICT curriculum. This initiative introduces learners to basic programming concepts using platforms like Scratch and Python, encouraging logical reasoning, creativity, and problem-solving. As a future educational leader, I view this as a crucial step in preparing students for the digital economy, where computational literacy is essential. However, the program’s success depends on continuous teacher training, adequate ICT infrastructure, and equitable access to devices, factors that must be addressed to ensure all Filipino students gain the skills needed for a technology-driven world.
