Education for a Changing World: The Social Purpose of Learning in UNESCO’s Futures of Education Report
Update Content:
I chose UNESCO’s 2021 "Futures of Education" report as my contemporary text.
(Full report: https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000379707)
Key points:
The report sets ambitious social objectives for education, emphasizing the following:
Education should promote peace, human rights, and sustainability.
Learning must be lifelong and inclusive, fostering critical thinking and cooperation.
Schools should serve as hubs for community transformation, not isolated institutions.
My Comment:
This text offers rich, substantive goals that align closely with the transformative pedagogy we are studying.
Unlike many policy statements that simply list outcomes like "higher test scores" or "job readiness," UNESCO proposes deep changes: education as a vehicle for social justice and global citizenship.
However, while the vision is powerful, the report could offer more concrete pathways for under-resourced countries to achieve these goals.
