The Benefit of Authentic Pedagogy in Teaching Technical Vocational and Livelihood Strand

Authentic pedagogy in teaching Technical Vocational and Livelihood Specialization is an appropriate method of teaching in a real work relevance and practical skills application. These methods enhance engagement and practical skills application in preparation in their future work. Since this is a student centered approach, students might be more motivated, experience the real application of skills and meet the demands of industry.

One of the advantages of authentic learning is student engagement. When students are presented with real or actual work scenarios and problems they become more motivated and relatable on the experience. In my bread and pastry production subject I observe that students are more engaged, passionate and active in performing tasks. When encountered problems in production they collaboratively analyse the trouble and find possible solutions to it. Having fully engaged, retention of the knowledge and deeper analysation of the subject matter is much evident. This results in a competent worker in the future.

Another authentic pedagogy enhances critical thinking and problem solving skills of the students. The simulation of real world situations and workplace scenarios gives students challenges to think critically, evaluate situations and post creative solutions. In my cookery class students learn to reconstruct recipes suited to availability of ingredients, think of other methods of cooking using limited tools and infuse traditional cuisine with modern inspired ones.

The advantages in Authentic pedagogy in Teaching Technical Vocational and Livelihood strand is undeniable. This will help students to engage, collaborate, think critically and develop creative solutions and become competent in their chosen career. This pedagogy will ensure that we have graduates who are prepared, competent, highly skilled and contribute to our economy.
