Negotiating Learner Differences MOOC’s Updates

Demographics Changing in our country and schools

As years go by, our minority numbers are increasing. This leads to more diversity in more spaces, including educational institutions. However, minority numbers increasing does not equate to good academic performance and graduation. As it stands, the only minority that is often in good standing academically with the white race is Asian. If combining the number of all minorities in the country will rival the number of white people in the country, then we will be in trouble academically overall unless we improve the quality of education for all those minorities. I feel that in the schools I have been teaching in, something I notice is that they are very focused on increasing student populations as a means to get more funding. Funding models are based on enrollment number, so schools want as many students as they can get, regardless of their needs. I believe this is a big problem that I am witnessing in these schools. As a country, we are seeing a decrease in reading levels and fluency and this is not being remedied by accepting students into an institution that does not have the resources they need to succeed just for the sake of money. A lot of these same schools are priding themselves on trying to educate black and brown children. If the school cannot provide appropriate resources for the black and brown children they are enrolling, it will not result in increasing academic numbers for the students of those ethnicities.

The article from the Institute of Education Sciences highlights the disparities between races. The percentage of Hispanic undergraduates increased from 10% in 2000 to 19% in 2016, while the percentage of White undergraduates decreased from 70% to 56% during the same period. Numbers like this will continue to be prevalent as long as minorities are being underserved. This will result in our education rankings decreasing further. This will also not automatically be remedied by our governments' current push to eliminate the Department of Education, as we do not have a solid plan for how things will improve without it. These changes can lead to bigger societal issues, such as having a significantly less educated population and not having the means to further advance our own country with the same vigor that we have in pa

st decades. We need solid systems in place to allow for more equitable advancements across races in our educational institutions.
