A Collection of Inclusive Museums
Abstract
The definition of a museum is in a constant state of change in line with the times. Contemporarily, inclusion and accessibility are considered a key mission for these institutions. While many museums have advanced their accessibility features or are actively working toward such enhancements, challenges remain. People with sensory impairments (PwSI) may find it challenging to access information. Identifying inclusive museums that cater to their specific needs can also prove challenging. This study compiles international examples of inclusive museums that offer content accessibility services for PwSI. These cases represent authoritative approaches to accessible experiences. The research aims to offer systematic information about the current accessible museum services available for PwSI. Museums of all types, irrespective of their displayed content, are considered in this study’s scope. From this basis, a new framework for categorizing accessible museums has been developed; this framework features different multi-sensory experiences. One purpose of the framework is to supply a standardized, systematic solution for museums to organize accessibility information concerning multisensory experiences. Another purpose is an accessibility paradigm for other museums to emulate. Researchers can also utilize it as a list of good practices for their studies. A desk research methodology was employed to gather examples of excellent practices. Qualitative analysis then informed the development of the framework. In addition, a personal profile form was generated from this framework to be utilized as an analytical tool by researchers. This article offers preliminary results for the construction of an open-source research platform, the Inclusive Museum Archive.
