Abstract

With the rapid development of social media, the communication platform for celebrity fans has gradually shifted from offline to online, and the establishment of online fan communities has provided a space and platform for fan groups to centralize information, organize and mobilize, enhance fan emotions, and strengthen fan identity. In addition, peer influence among celebrity fans and the atmosphere created by fan communities significantly influence the appearance concept and body image of young Chinese female fans on social media. By employing in-depth interviews, semi-structured interviews, and even web-based, remote one-on-one video interviews young Chinese female fans were studied. The data collected were analyzed to ascertain how interactions between fan community and peer-to-peer comparisons affect the body image of young Chinese female fans’ appearance concepts on social media. The findings suggest that peer interactions within fan communities have a significant impact on the beauty ideals and body image of young female fans in China.
