Abstract

Nowadays, applying technological tools to teaching is inevitable and, thus, it can be valuable for overcoming difficulties in teaching and learning poetry. Teaching poetic language is challenging because of its unique nature. To this end, this research investigates the effectiveness of Corpus Pedagogical Stylistic (CPS) in teaching poetry to foreign learners. This approach implies integrating corpus with pedagogical stylistic tools to teach poetry to undergraduate students through mobile devices‏. Specialized learners’ corpora were collected from the students’ poetic analyses to identify distinguished language patterns. The approach stimulates active discovery learning through the application of technology, specifically by utilizing British National Corpus, a freely accessible online corpus linguistic tool, on their mobile devices. Thus, this study has two objectives: first, examining the importance of CPS approach in learning and teaching poetry to Iraqi English foreign learners (EFL) students; second, determining the effect to which the CPS approach reveals patterns in language that enable EFL students to interpret poetic texts with linguistic evidence. The findings show that the CPS approach was effective in helping students to analyze the poetic language based on linguistic evidence. The learners demonstrated improved skills in analysis throughout its application. They could provide evidence from the texts to support their analyses.
