Bio-Wiz Framework for Industrial Design Practices
Abstract
Visualizing, exploring, and innovating have been key aspects for Industrial designers in the development of any physical product as an outcome. Biomimicry is one of the approaches to getting inspiration for exploration and innovative solutions for the challenges faced in day-to-day life. In this study, the authors investigated existing frameworks used for Biomimicry and Design Thinking. Further, the authors propose a Bio-Wiz framework for using Biomimicry in the field of Industrial Design. This includes understanding and exploring nature through initial literature research, species selection inspired by a unique function, analyzing the biological cycle and anatomical structure, mapping innovative application opportunities, ideating for new design possibilities, three-dimensional (3D) modeling for visualizing the new product idea, and so on. The illustrations in the study describe the participants’ work on the implementation and the outcome of the framework. This research emphasizes how Industrial designers can derive innovative applications using the described framework. Participants and industry experts analyzed the framework’s performance using the Likert scale, which indicated its high efficiency in the derived output. Moreover, the framework also contributes to exploring visual grammar and 3D visualization of a product. This flexible framework can be adapted to design projects demanding innovative solutions.
