Abstract

This study evaluated learners’ perspectives on the PicPecc app using the mobile application rating scale (MARS). This ensured the assessment of its overall quality and effectiveness in promoting learners’ well-being and reducing app abandonment. A quantitative descriptive research design was employed. Participants aged 11 to 14 years from a public school in Gauteng, South Africa, were expected to use the PicPecc app for a week. They were then asked to complete the MARS tool to evaluate the effectiveness of the PicPecc app. Data were analyzed using quantitative content analysis and descriptive statistics. The PicPecc app received high ratings across all MARS sections: engagement (mean = 4.4), functionality (mean = 4.7), aesthetics (mean = 4.7), and information quality (mean = 4.6). Participants found the app engaging, easy to navigate, visually appealing, and trustworthy. Some concerns about privacy and data security were noted. However, all the factors indicated that the learners intend to use the app continuously. The findings suggest that mHealth tools like the PicPecc app support learners’ mental health and well-being. Additionally, incorporating learners’ perspectives when evaluating mHealth can result in sustained use and decrease app abandonment. Health-care practitioners and educators should consider integrating such tools into their practices to provide learners with accessible and effective mental health support.
