Abstract

Metamodernism seeks to transcend the cynical attitude of postmodernism, by invoking optimism in the face of suffering, while being critically aware of the limitations of human efforts. Vermeulen and van den Akker observe the resurgence of romantic ideals as indicative of a shift toward a hopeful vision for the future. Metamodern neoromanticism is not escapism but a renewed desire to develop alternate pathways that spur positive change. Digital literature deeply resonates with metamodern sensibility in its ability to embrace participatory culture, emotional engagement, and experimentation. Andy Campbell’s 3D/virtual reality poem, “The Water Cave,” takes the reader/player through a frightening and fascinating journey inside a dark, flooded subterranean cave that reflects the narrator’s struggle with addiction and depression. This study intends to discuss the twin evils of depression and alcohol addiction in the poem. It aims to demonstrate the impact of the metamodern approach in bringing about hope, healing, and restoration.
