Abstract

The Ti Qin Opera Festival is a cultural event that has been held in Chongyang County for more than thirty years to celebrate and showcase the traditional local art form. However, a controversy of differences has emerged between the traditional practices and the innovative approach of Ti Qin Opera in the festivalization of the opera. This study uses the qualitative approach of ethnography to examine how differing perspectives on the tradition and innovation of Ti Qin Opera led to conflict among stakeholders and how the controversy was reconciled. Data were gathered through participant observation and interviews with festival performers, audiences, members of the Ti Qin Opera Association, and government officials. Data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. This study examines the power dynamics behind the Ti Qin Opera Festival, focusing on the roles of the government, festival organizers, performers, and audiences. The findings indicate that while the government and organizers influence festival regulations, the performers’ and audiences’ interest in innovation has prompted the authorities to make adjustments. The Ti Qin Opera Festival highlights the importance of adaptability in balancing diverse interests, ensuring its continued cultural relevance.
