The Evolution and Intersection of Ecocriticism and the Sublime
Abstract
This piece of research seeks to trace the origins, development, trends, and the interplay of ecocriticism and the philosophy of the sublime in literary criticism. It attempts to explore how modern ecocritical and the sublime theories have evolved from early philosophical, aesthetic, literary, and environmental ideas and how they have impacted thoughts, policies, and actions in relation to our environment. By investigating key figures and seminal works, this research examines how both ecocriticism and the sublime become instrumental in redirecting and reshaping literary criticism to environmental concerns and human–nature relationship and interactions. This critical overview underscores the continued relevance and importance of ecocriticism and the sublime as effective tools of literary criticism, especially in the context of contemporary substantial environmental crises and serious ecological discourse in the existing scholarly conversations. It also provides readers with a gestalt understanding of the current state of ecocriticism and the sublime and predicts future directions and trends within the matrix of literary criticism.
