Abstract
This study aims to examine the relationship between language, thought, and social practices in the complex dynamics that influence perceptions and attitudes toward gender equality in Lombok. The focus lies on linguistic aspects understood by speakers that affect their social actions concerning the acceleration of gender goals in the context of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) in Lombok. This study adopts the SapirWhorf determinism and relativism theories. The understanding of determinism and relativism among Tuan Guru in Lombok, particularly in accelerating the achievement of gender-related SDGs, is analyzed using an ethnographic method comprising four stages: ethnographic interviews, unit analysis, segment analysis, and cultural theme discovery. The findings reveal that the ethnographic study of the Tuan Guru community in Lombok provides critical insights into how language, culture, and cross-cultural interactions can shape more inclusive gender norms. The reinterpretation of vocabulary indicating gender norms can be modified through contextual approaches that respect both local and global values. The Tuan Guru community has successfully utilized metaphors to promote women’s participation in education and employment as instruments of social empowerment. Cross-cultural interactions and higher education opportunities enable Tuan Guru to integrate progressive perspectives into the local context. This dialogue positions them as agents of social change relevant to global challenges, such as achieving the SDGs. Local idioms in the Sasak language demonstrate significant potential to reinforce narratives of gender equality. By leveraging inclusive local cultural values, Tuan Guru can play a strategic role in realizing SDGs, particularly gender-related SDG targets.
