Abstract

In this technological era, the term “metaverse” has gained significant attention. This is reflected in contemporary films like James Cameron’s Avatar series, which integrates augmented and virtual reality to explore the potential of metaverse. Through a qualitative study of both the films, this article attempts to shed light upon the imaginative prowess of the concept of metaverse offered by the films. The article analyzes in general the technological aspect and the posthuman philosophy depicted in the films, which makes them a valuable tool for understanding the future of mankind. Further, it examines the posthuman possibility put forward by the ideology of Pandora’s indigenous population, the Na’vi, delving into the critical posthumanist idea of viewing the human and their relationship with the environment for survival, thus highlighting the importance of coevolution. An empirical study was also conducted among engineering students to ascertain their perception of metaverse and its application in the aforementioned films, as the prospective technocrats, though exposed to the knowledge and application of technology, are hardly aware of its relation to humanity. This approach therefore encourages them to transcend an anthropocentric perspective, comprehending the relationship between technology and humanity and its essential value for catering to better environmental sustainability.
