Assessment for Learning MOOC’s Updates
Discussion Forum: Essential Update #3
An interesting example of alternative way of assessing students is student's led conference. It is based on the child's portfolio, which is a carefully selected collection of a student's work produced over the year. Instead of a single test, a portfolio presents a story of a student's learning journey, showcasing their growth, effort, and skills. Learners get to introduce and discuss the content of their portfolios in the students led conference, "Portfolio Day", in front of their parents and teachers.
The best thing about this approach is that it reflects the child's true level and it documents their progress along the year. Portfolio assessment values the process of learning over just the final product. For learners, this can be incredibly beneficial. It empowers them by giving them a voice in how they demonstrate their knowledge, fostering self-reflection and reducing test anxiety. A student can show their creativity, problem-solving skills, and resilience, which a standardized test might miss.
An essential key for a successful portfolio assessment is to be accompanied by reflection sheets attached to the portfolio pieces. The reflection sheets must include clear rubric to measure learner's understanding of each concept.
Constructive feedback is also an important component for a successful portfolio assessment. Children should be aware of their achievments and areas that requires improvement.
However, a portfolio assessment comes with challenges too. It is far more time-consuming for both students and teachers to compile portfolio pieces and evaluate them. The subjective nature of grading can also make it difficult to ensure fairness and consistency across different classrooms. Ultimately, while it provides a more authentic and holistic view of a student, its intensive nature prevents it from being a practical solution for large-scale, school-wide evaluation.
