Testing Intelligence vs. Knowledge

Testing Intelligence vs. Knowledge

Intelligence tests measure thinking skills, problem-solving, memory, and learning potential. They show what someone can do.

Knowledge tests measure what someone has already learned, like facts or skills in school subjects. They show what someone knows.

When each is appropriate:

Intelligence tests: Good for understanding learning potential or guiding educational support. Not appropriate for grading or comparing students’ knowledge.

Knowledge tests: Good for checking mastery of a subject or skill. Not appropriate for measuring overall ability or potential.

Example comment to peers:

“@Maria I agree intelligence tests are more about potential than what someone already knows, which is why they shouldn’t be used for grading.”
