Assessment for Learning MOOC’s Updates
ALTERNATIVE FORM OF EVALUATION
This will be Performance-Based Assessment Example entitled “Community Improvement Project”
Assessment Type: Performance-Based / Project-Based Assessment
Grade Level: Elementary to Senior High School
Duration: 3 weeks
Learning Competencies:
By the end of the task, students should be able to:
1.Apply subject knowledge and skills to real-world community issues.
2.Demonstrate critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving abilities.
3.Collaborate effectively with peers in planning, research, and presentation.
4.Communicate findings and proposed solutions clearly using various media.
Activity Description:
Students will identify a problem in their school or local community (e.g., waste management, water conservation, bullying awareness, nutrition, or energy use) and propose a practical, sustainable solution.
They will:
1.Research the problem — gather data, conduct interviews, or observe the situation.
2.Analyze possible causes and impacts.
3.Develop a plan or product that addresses the issue.
Examples of the task applicable for each subject.
- A Math group creates a cost analysis or infographic showing statistics on waste.
- A Science group designs a simple water filtration model.
- An English group writes and performs an awareness campaign or script.
- A TLE group develops a small product prototype made from recycled materials.
- Present their findings and proposed solution to the class, school administrators, or community members through a live presentation, poster, or video.
Student’s Reflection Guide Questions:
After presenting, students write a short reflection on:
1.What they learned about the issue and their subject.
2.How their group worked together.
3.What they would improve if they repeated the project.
Analysis of this Performance-Based Assessment as an Alternative:
- Students demonstrate knowledge through real action and creation, not tests.
- It’s authentic — connects school learning to community life.
- Teachers assess both the process (research, teamwork) and product (presentation, proposed solution).
- It builds 21st-century skills: communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity.
