Enhancing Assessment and Learning with Google Classroom Analytics
Many schools nowadays use Google Classroom not only to share lessons but also as a learning analytics platform. Google Classroom is a learning and assessment tool that offers learning analytics. It gives teachers data about student engagement and performance. Teachers can view the percentage of active students, assignment completion rate, and average grades. They can also see which students missed or did not open assignments. These features help teachers monitor student progress easily (Google, 2024).
How it works:
Google Classroom analytics work by collecting information from student activities in the class. For example, when students submit work or comment on a post, the system records their activity. Teachers use this data to see patterns, like who needs help or who is improving.Teachers can see:
- Percentage of active students (students who viewed materials, posted, and submitted assignments) within that time period.
- Assignment-completion rate (percentage of assignments due that were turned in).
- Average grade for all graded assignments in the period.
Effects:
First, it helps teachers make decisions based on data. If a student’s completion rate is low, the teacher can reach out and give support. Second, it improves communication because both teachers and students can see progress. Third, studies show that Google Classroom improves student performance and engagement when used well (Gupta & Pathania, 2021). Still, analytics alone do not ensure learning unless teachers act on the data.
Learning Analytics helps teachers understand student performance and engagement through data reports. They make teaching and assessment more efficient by guiding decisions and improving feedback. The learning outcome improves when teachers use the data to support students.
