Context-aware learning
One of the key learning ideas that has not appeared in mainstream conversations is Context-Aware Learning, or CAL for short.”
“Context-aware learning” can be described as learning with learning environments that are sensitive to the context in which the learners are situated, and that adapt to the context regardless of whether the context is the learner’s location, time, activities, device, or social context, or even the environmental context in which they are situated, unlike traditional learning where all learners are exposed to the same content regardless of situational considerations.”
In the field of ubiquitous learning, “context” is important since learning is not accomplished in a vacuum. The learner who is walking in the city, working in the laboratory, or engaging in the community event is faced with authentic contexts where the learning is immediately applicable. Context-Aware Learning corresponds to the concept of learning anytime and anywhere, but it is more specialized and identifies learning according to what the learner is doing at the current moment.
Example in Practice
A great case in point for Context-Aware Learning is learning apps for mobile use in museums that incorporate QR code and GPS technology. When learners enter a particular gallery in a museum, the learning app automatically presents them with videos, stories, or questioning prompts linked to the very exhibit they physically may be observing. Instead of reading static information on an exhibit case, learners complete activity tasks that link artifacts to larger themes.
An example of this can be found in health care and nurse education. A wireless learning system can recognize when a learner happens to be in an actual hospital setting and dispense rapid-access learning modules related to patient procedures for enhanced understanding of patient cases. Such modules include quick-access guidelines or simulations related to patient procedures for faster learning.
Why It Matters for Learning Ecologies
Context-Aware Learning extends the learning ecosystem beyond the classroom and the LMS environment by interconnecting physical space with technology. Context-Aware Learning promotes experience-based learning, critical thinking, and lifelong learning. These objectives align with those of ubiquitous learning.
