Abstract

This study explored the experiences of fourteen Ghanaian students enrolled in a doctorate program at the University of South Africa (UNISA), a leading provider of doctoral education via distance learning. The study employed qualitative case study research design as a methodology, using telephone interviews as the tool for data collection. The interview transcripts were analyzed following a six-phase procedure for thematic analysis. The study revealed that Ghanaian students are attracted to studying at UNISA particularly due to the flexibility and convenience of their programs. The study further shows that periodic on-campus engagements with distance learning doctoral students is beneficial for their success, given that they can contact faculty for critical feedback needed for the progress of their study. Furthermore, the study recommended that institutions offering doctoral programs via distance learning take interest in their reputation and credibility, as it is a pull factor in attracting students to their programs.
