Personal experience on recent changes in education

One major political discourse and public policy in the Philippines that aims to establish social goals for education is the MATATAG Curriculum, launched by the Department of Education (DepEd) in 2023. This curricular reform is intended to meet the changing educational needs of Filipino learners by putting greater weight on foundational skills and conforming to international standards.

The curriculum integrates critical thinking and digital literacy to prepare students for the complexities of the modern world. By fostering analytical skills and technological proficiency, it aims to equip learners with the tools necessary for informed decision-making and adaptability in a digital society.

The MATATAG Curriculum prioritizes the growth of the total child, not just the acquisition of knowledge in the academic sphere but also physical, emotional, and social welfare. It is this approach that hopes to yield well-rounded individuals that can be productive members of society.

The MATATAG Curriculum is being rolled out in phases, beginning with Kindergarten and Grades 1, 4, and 7 in the 2024-2025 school year. Although the reform is a step towards education modernization, its success rests on effective teachers' training, budgeting, and ongoing monitoring to guarantee that the curriculum achieves its goals.
