Active Learning
One of the most effective and engaging active learning strategies is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). While many of us are familiar with project work or group discussions, PBL goes a step further by placing real world problems at the center of the learning experience. In a course on sustainability, for example, students might be asked to design a plan to reduce food waste in their local communities.
They would need to investigate the causes of food waste, analyze data, interview stakeholders, and present a feasible solution. Along the way, they learn research skills, systems thinking, communication strategies, and social responsibility.
PBL fosters deep engagement because students see the relevance of what they are learning. They are not just preparing for a test they are solving meaningful problems, often with real-world applications.
