Formative Test

A formative test is a type of assessment used to monitor student learning during instruction and to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning; such assessments are generally low-stakes and help identify students’ strengths and weaknesses so instruction can be adjusted before final evaluations (Carnegie Mellon University, 2025).

This type of test is not graded but included to the process of learning but cannot be added in the grade of the students. It is required because it is use as a basis in remediation process. Use to determine if the students learned or achieved the goal within the session. This is one of the essential parts of the lesson plan and it must be executed. Without this process the teacher cannot be able to identify which part of the lesson is clear and which part needs more explanation. The strength of the students can be identified same also with their weaknesses. Problem can be identified at early stage if this process implemented regularly.

These are the possible examples of formative test, make a check list of words that used in the session. A five-item test multiple choice, true or false or identification. Draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic. This can be the summary of the lesson. Submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lesson in a session. Submit a research proposal for early feedback. These test can be a form of exit ticket, short quiz, Think-Pair- Share, Concept Map, one minute paper, true or false, quick check, or observation check list which is performance based.
