School as Safe Space: Educational Psychology Needs and Relevance

Educational psychology refers to the study of human learning through instructional materials and key factors affecting the development of knowledge and skills. This branch of psychology explains the role of materials used in institutions, schools, and universities in shaping the ideas and mindset of an individual. Education psychology is vital for the instructors to support them in giving the proper approach and pedagogical method needed of the students

While it helps the teachers to prepare and formulate the learning outcomes for their students, the need of this branch must be addressed in order to meet the needs of the students also. For instance, several mental health issues arise in different colleges and universities resulting to the severe mental health conditions among students, ages 18-20 years old. Educational psychology must meet the objective of efficient learning of different students with different capabilities. With that, school psychologists cater to the student’s academic, social, emotional, and mental concerns by conducting counseling sessions and close-interviews with the students. They are also conducting amplitude and achievement tests to assess the previous learning and potential learning of the students.

As a future mental health practitioner, the relevance of these needs help me to understand and potentially contribute to the resolution of these concerns. In educational setting, psychology is vital to be addressed as our brain works in all activities happening in school
