Educational Counseling Need
One significant educational counseling need that remains highly relevant today is career guidance for senior high school students. As students navigate academic choices and prepare for life after graduation, many struggle to make informed decisions about their future careers due to limited self-awareness, inadequate exposure to career options, and external pressures from family or society. Effective career counseling helps bridge this gap by providing students with the tools to understand their interests, strengths, and values, and by connecting these to realistic educational and occupational paths. This process is not just about choosing a profession—it fosters self-efficacy, decision-making skills, and lifelong adaptability, which are essential in an ever-changing global economy (Gati & Levin, 2014).
In the Philippine context, where the K–12 curriculum aims to prepare learners for employment, entrepreneurship, or higher education, the role of educational counselors has become even more crucial. Integrating structured career guidance programs within the senior high school curriculum ensures that students are not only academically prepared but also mentally and emotionally equipped to make life choices (Salazar-Clemeña, 2020). Moreover, incorporating psychometric assessments, mentorship programs, and exposure to real-world industries can help personalize the counseling process, allowing students to see the connection between school learning and future career paths.
However, challenges such as counselor-to-student ratios, lack of updated resources, and limited parental involvement still hinder effective implementation. Addressing these issues requires collaboration among teachers, administrators, parents, and community stakeholders. Strengthening career counseling practices ensures that students make informed and meaningful decisions—contributing not only to their personal development but also to national workforce readiness and economic growth.
