Abstract

This study investigates the practicality of a mathematics textbook developed for the Secondary School Mathematics Capita Selecta course using a realistic mathematics education approach. The textbook was evaluated by thirteen pre-service mathematics teachers using a questionnaire that assessed six key aspects: introduction, presentation of materials, use of media, exercises, language, and student engagement. The analysis of the questionnaire data revealed that the textbook achieved high scores across all aspects, indicating a strong level of practicality. The realistic approach employed in the textbook effectively bridges the gap between abstract mathematical concepts and their real-world applications, making the subject matter more relevant and engaging for students. The textbook’s incorporation of real-world problems, scenarios, and examples fosters a deeper understanding of mathematics and its significance in various aspects of life. The study found that the textbook’s adherence to constructivist principles, emphasizing clear explanations, logical sequencing of materials, and the effective use of media, facilitated the construction of knowledge by the pre-service teachers. Ultimately, these findings imply that practical mathematics textbooks significantly support the achievement of learning objectives in educational practice.
