Transformative Learning
Transformative learning is presented as an educational innovation that redefines the purpose and process of education. Rather than focusing on the transmission of fixed knowledge, transformative learning emphasizes learner agency, critical reflection, and meaningful engagement with real-world contexts, enabling learners to reshape how they think, act, and participate in society.
It is considered transformative because it shifts education from passive reception to active knowledge construction, repositions teachers as facilitators and designers of learning, connects learning to social and technological change, and aims for deep, long-term changes in learners’ capacities, identities, and ways of understanding rather than short-term academic outcomes.
