e-Learning Ecologies MOOC’s Updates

Education in times of pandemic

Hello, I am an English teacher in Brazil and I have been teaching for almost 4 years. The year of 2020 is, surely, the most challenging year for most of the educators. Suddenly, everything changed and we have had to adapt ourselves. I was used to face-to-face classes and I have never had an online experience as a teacher. So, I had to study a lot in order to provide the best I could to my students.

Ubiquitous learning has changed most of the concepts I had in mind when it comes to teaching and learning. Throughout the semester, I could realize my students were practicing their autonomy, I was able to know more about them and they got closer to their peers on the online environment. Moving from a traditional way of teaching to a new one was not an easy process but it did succeed.

I have decided to work with the flipped classroom. Lage et al affirm that the flipped classroom consists of moving the events that would happen inside the traditional classroom to the outside, (LAGE et al, 2000, p.32). Every week they had an activity to do available on the Google Classroom plataform and they also had some discussion topics to give their opinion. On our synchronous counter in the Zoom, they would practice their speaking with the whole class by debating about different things. Classes were very fun and most of them said they would rather keep studying online even after pandemic is over.

Some of the plataforms I have used were: Google Classroom, Power Point, Google Forms, Kahoot, Zoom, Youtube and Liveworksheets.

Of course there are many other tools educators can use and I have been studying a lot to understand more about the online environment. In case you have suggestions or something else, feel free to leave your comment. It would be a pleasure to hear from you.

To illustrate a little bit, here you are some of the activities I've done with my students. The first one is an activity they had the whole week to do and the second one is an activity for them to think and reflect over a song.
