Ang Kilos at Pagninilay ng Magsasariling Mag-aaral or The Action and Reflection of the Self-Governing Learner
This concept frames Self-Regulated Learning (SRL) as a cyclical, three-phase process governed by metacognition, specifically adapted to cultivate resilient and responsible learners in the Philippine educational setting.
The core idea is that through continuous metacognitive reflection on one's action, a student gains the confidence and skill to master their own learning journey, embodying the Filipino value of kasipagan (diligence) and pananagutan (responsibility).
The 3-Phase Metacognitive SRL Cycle (PLAN - ACT - REFLECT)
The cycle is constantly driven by metacognitive questions that a Filipino student is encouraged to ask themselves at each stage:
Phase 1: Pre-Actional (Forethought & Planning) - This is the planning and goal-setting stage, where metacognitive knowledge and motivation are activated.
-
Key Action: Defining the task and setting goals.
-
SRL Component: Task Analysis, Goal Setting, Strategic Planning.
-
The Filipino Metacognitive Question: "Ano ang balak kong gawin, at bakit ito mahalaga sa aking pag-aaral, pamilya, at komunidad?" ("What is my plan, and why is this important to my studies, family, and community?")
-
Philippine Context Focus: Linking the academic task to a personal, familial, or national purpose (e.g., relating a science project to a local environmental issue) to enhance motivation and perceived value.
Phase 2: Actional (Performance & Monitoring) - This is the execution stage, where the learner monitors their effort and progress.
- Key Action: Using strategies and managing resources.
- SRL Component: Self-Monitoring, Self-Control, Attention Focusing, Time Management (e.g., avoiding the temptation of the latest K-Drama or mobile game).
- The Filipino Metacognitive Question :"Gumagana ba ang aking paraan ng pag-aaral? Ano ang ginagawa ko ngayon, at kailangan ko bang mag-iba ng diskarte?"("Is my way of studying working? What am I doing right now, and do I need to change my strategy?")
- Philippine Context Focus: Developing resilience (diskarte) and resourcefulness in the face of common challenges like poor internet connection, noisy home environments, or limited access to materials.
Phase 3: Post-ACtional (Self-Reflection and Evaluation) - This is the reflection stage, where outcomes are evaluated, and future plans are adjusted. This closes the loop and prepares the student for the next cycle.
- Key Action: Comparing results to goals and attributing outcomes.
- SRL Component: Self-Evaluation, Attribution, Adaptive inference (What workd? What didn't? Why?)
- The FIlipino Metcognitive Question: "Ano ang natutunan ko sa proseso ng pag-aaral, hindi lang sa sagot? Paano ako magiging mas mahusay sa susunod?" ("What did I learn from the process of studing, not just the answer? How can I be better next time?")
- Philippine Context Focus: Shifting the focus form simple pagpasa (passing/getting the grade) to process mastery and building a sense of personal efficacy (competence) that transcends extrinsic rewards.
Outcome: Ang Magsasariling Mag-aaral (The Self-Governing Learner)
A student who consistently practices this metacognitive cycle evolves into a Magsasariling Mag-aaral who is:
- Awtomatiko (Autonomous): Takes full ownership of their learning choices.
- Mahusay (Competent): Masters specific learning strategies (diskarte).
- May Pananagutan (Responsible): Connects personal academic success to collective community welfare.
