The Learning in the Social Mind
Group school study is a good example of a learning experience that involves the use of the social mind. Students in a group study convey their lessons, share ideas and explain lessons to other students in a group work together to solve the problems. It is not merely learning as every student comes with his/her knowledge and thinking. When they collaborate, they form what is referred to as collective intelligence and this implies that the group is more intelligent than the individual member is. Collaborative learning is the process according to which people learn each other helping each other.
The advantage of such a process is that it simplifies the process of learning, makes it more participatory and meaningful. Students have an opportunity to ask, check and even correct answers in common. This will also develop confidence and social skills, as they will have to listen, explain and respect the opinion of their partners. As an example, students can divide topics among themselves and study them, then teach them to a group, when they study together when they need to take an exam. People study at a higher pace and comprehend more than they would have done when they are studying in isolation. The latter demonstrates the strength of learning supported by community and cooperation.
