New Learning MOOC’s Updates

Experiencing the Shift to Hybrid and Digital Learning

In the past few years, I’ve experienced a major shift in education as both a learner and occasional facilitator — the move toward hybrid and digital-first learning environments. During the pandemic, courses that were once entirely in-person migrated to Zoom or learning platforms like Coursera, and this changed not only the format but the nature of education. For example, I completed a professional development module where asynchronous video lectures were paired with peer-reviewed assignments. I found the flexibility empowering — I could learn at my own pace and revisit lectures — but I also noticed a trade-off: less spontaneous dialogue and fewer informal connections with peers. At the same time, these platforms encouraged me to engage in global discussions I never would have encountered in a local classroom. This tension between flexibility and community is, for me, the essence of the “new learning” moment.
