Social and emotional learning conditions
Practicing positive social and emotional conditions can have a positive effect on learning in schools, jobs, in homes, and more. If a student is exceptional at listening, problem solving, and communication then they are more likely to succeed in social settings and less likely to bully or engange in violence. In a workplace environment there are things a customer could say or do to upset an employee, but if the employee does not have the SEL skills to control his emotions or communicate effectively with the customer then he risks getting in trouble with his boss.
The Meta-Analysis on the effect size of bullying perpetration is very concerning with it showing that bullying perpetration is not being reduced. Dorothy Espelage studies the social-emotional conditions of learning by surveying over 4000 students in different middle schools and implementing 50 minute lesson over a course of three years. We understand that one research goal was to apply positive approaches to problem behavior, which should help students work together to decrease bullying. Evidence shows that prevention methods work and should be properly introduced into schools. Effective programs such as the second step prevention program are shown to be effective in school to decrease bullying perpetration in schools.
